Daddy Down

GoDaddy services down for most of the day Monday, Sept. 10 2012
Posted by USPA

Many of you are already quite aware of the denial of service style attack executed on today. In fact, there are probably many of you that lost some form of service as a result. You may have been inconvenienced by not having access to your email, or maybe your website was down most of the day. We're not going to sit here and slam GoDaddy for this. That is not to say that what happened today was not highly inexcusable. The truth is it is inexcusable. The fact that products provided to thousands upon thousands of people and totaling into the hundreds of thousands of products and services was breeched in such a manner is simply wrong. It became clear just how vulnerable they / we really are.  Here at the US Press Association we have in the past discussed choosing other services for hosting and other IT related products we use. We have had discussions pertaining to security with regards to GoDaddy. We are no stranger to malicious web based attacks while using GoDaddy services. Here we are again experiencing similar issues. Yet the fact remains that GoDaddy does offer great services with more than fair cost as well as a top notch customer service department. We can only hope that these security issues do not come as a result of offering their products and services at too low a cost. It is clear that the cost is high.  We kind of sat back today and took all of this in stride. Some of us could check email, others could not. We reflected on memories of past security issues. It did not affect us the same way it affects other types of news organizations. Our purpose is to provide more of a supporting role to journalist, not reporting on and posting late breaking news. It does not take away the fact that while we typically do not post breaking news, this event did take away our option to do so, and that is unacceptable. The event today should cause us to pause for a moment to really comprehend the advantages and disadvantages of living in this digital age. Were you running around frantically today asking yourself what you can do to fix this? Were you cursing at Bob Parsons GoDaddy's founder because your site was down and not making money? What was it and when was it stated anywhere that these things were all guaranteed services that we will always have and never lose for more than 30 minutes at a time? It's a wakeup call to say the least. While this event is or at least has not been typical, what's to say it won’t be? There are various stories that can be tied to today’s event. Some of these past issues, others some more recent news surrounding GoDaddy and their support for the highly unpopular (SOPA) Stop Online Piracy Act Bill. We will be touching on that issue as well as others in the near future, but for now "whewwwwww, our email is back".

It is true that the US Press Association is new in comparison to the Mega Media Conglomerates that exist today. Even those large, main stream media outlets once had humble beginnings. The US Press Association unofficially began in 1999 and the company US Press Association Inc. was officially formed in 2001.
The US Press Association was started in an effort to leverage rights, privileges and accessability of freelancers with that of the more well know networks and main stream media journalists. The concept of having strength in numbers was the underlying theme and vision for the organization. The Freelance Press Association was started that same year, but has since merged with the US Press Association. Some of the earliest members of the US Press Association were able to access and report from venues, events and scenes of breaking news that were once commonly restricted to freelance journalist.

Recognizing the importance that "NEW MEDIA" was going to have on the world we live in, the US Press Association had and still has the vision that freelance journalist of all types need an outlet for their stories (YOUR STORIES), and an organization that will be there to help and support them every step of the way. Members are free to submit stories, photos, video and other forms of media for website submission. Having the member ID, 24/7 online and phone confirmation of membership along with having a profile listed in a verifiable database help to increase odds of maximizing the impact of the news event members want to cover by being granted certain privileges.
One point that needs to be clear is that the US Press Association does not give out "press passes", some sites make this claim and it is false!. What we do for our members is issue a US Press Association Press ID, "Press Credentials". This ID clearly identifies you as a member of our organization and your profile information is able to be verified in our domestic or international database of journalists.

What the US Press Association will do is "help our members acquire press/media passes" to various venues, events etc. We often serve as a liaison between our members and event coordinators or directors. We also issue members assignment letters to various news events, places, venues.

Beware of deception! This is not us, do not be deceived.
Don't subject you or your computer to the risk of some of these websites. Many of these illegitimate sites are full or malware, spyware and trojan horses that can severely damage your computer, compromise your online safety and contribute to identity theft.

We urge you not to be deceived by some of the offers that are out there. In this day and age it is easy to fall for misinformation and scams available on slickly produced websites.
Do your research! Track where YOUR MONEY is going! You may be surprised to find where your money will be headed, and maybe more surprised to discover it's not even in the United States. If you choose to obtain one of the many "Press Passes" that are being sold simply to attempt gaining backstage access to a concert, or attempt to interview a celebrity let us offer you a better solution, "Join the US Press Association". We WILL make every effort to help you in your pursuit to cover a great story or event. We will offer the support you need, and answer the questions you may have. Become part of a legitimate movement, a legitimate organization. We are a member based organization and we are passionate about news and media, and we want to help you in any way we can. If you don't care about joining an organization that will help you, do yourself a favor and check out ebay. You will save yourself quite a bit of money and some embarrassment when either ID is rejected.
Thank you for taking a moment to read this, feel free to send us an email or call us if you have any questions or need any further information.
Examples of using stock photos - you will see these images on other sites in an attempt to fool you, so "Please do your homework"!
