Astonishing news coming from Fukushima diary last month; Date city located in Fukushima prefecture reportedly began serving bamboo shoots to all kindergarten, elementary, and junior high schools starting this May as apart of the school luch menu. Fukushima prefecture found 14 of the 16 shoots examined contained certain levels of (radioisotope cesium) Cs-134 and Cs-137. Radioactive cesium is one of the by-products of nuclear fission. According to the US EPA website, any form of exposure due to nuclear accidents can result in higher risks for cancer. If consumed this would cause an internal exposure rather than the typical external; thereby exposing living tissue to gamma and beta radiation. The US EPA further purports that the health risk is dependent on exposure conditions; if the exposure is very high, burns, and death can result. Date city officials have yet to comment on their sudden change to the school lunch menu.
